Internal knowledge community

Our task was to design an internal community platform that makes institutional knowledge accessible, not siloed. Employees needed a place to post, learn, connect, and ask — without leaving their organization's ecosystem. The challenge was making it feel like a product people want to open, not a system they have to use.

Enterprise platform. Human experience.

Government UI, modern product expectations

The client had an existing UI direction — formal, institutional, conservative. The product needed to feel current and intelligent without departing from the organization's visual identity. Finding that balance was a core design challenge.

Knowledge that lives nowhere useful

Expertise existed across the organization but was hard to find and harder to access. Employees didn't know who to ask, what resources existed, or where relevant conversations were happening.

AI that connects, not just answers

The Pick a Brain feature had to do more than retrieve information — it had to surface people, posts, and resources in context. The AI needed to feel like a knowledgeable colleague, not a search engine.

My Role

My Role

I led the UX direction and client communication — ensuring the experience met the organization's standards while feeling genuinely usable by the employees who would open it daily.

01

Community feed
Designed the main feed with trending posts, channel posts, and community activity organized by specialization

02

Knowledge Hub
Designed the resource library where employees can find, save, and share institutional knowledge

03

Pick a Brain (AI feature)
Designed the AI-powered discovery experience: ask a question, get relevant posts, resources, and expert recommendations — online or offline

04

Communities & channels — Designed the community structure: join by interest, create channels, organize by discipline

Key Design Decisions

Key Design Decisions

Give the institutional UI an AI layer, not a replacement. The client's existing visual direction was formal and government-grade. Replacing it wasn't an option — but leaving it unchanged would make the AI feature feel disconnected. We introduced subtle AI-specific visual cues — the Pick a Brain interaction, the feed highlights — that signal intelligence without redesigning the identity.

Option considered

Full visual redesign to feel more like a modern product

Decision made

Extend the existing identity with an AI-native visual layer — modern feel, institutional trust

Pick a Brain — knowledge plus people. Most AI features answer questions. Pick a Brain goes further: ask about a topic, get relevant Knowledge Hub resources, related community posts, and a list of experts you can actually meet — virtually or in person. The AI doesn't just retrieve — it connects.

Feed organized by what you care about. The community feed isn't one stream — it's organized by specialization, channel, and trending content. Employees see what's relevant to their discipline first, with the option to explore beyond. The leaderboard and suggested channels surface who and what is worth following.

Solution

Solution

Solution

Community feed Trending posts, channel activity, and community updates — organized by specialization. Employees can share thoughts, post resources, and engage with colleagues across the organization in one place.

01

Knowledge Hub A structured resource library with articles, guides, templates, and seasonal links. Everything the organization knows, in one searchable place.

02

Pick a Brain Ask a question. Get Knowledge Hub results, relevant community posts, and a curated list of internal experts available for a coffee chat — online or in person. The AI surfaces the right knowledge and the right people simultaneously.

03

Communities & channels Join communities by discipline — Strategy, Center of Excellence, and others. Create channels within them. Organize conversations around topics that matter to your work.

04

Events & leaderboard Upcoming events visible on the feed with live and offline options. A community leaderboard that recognizes top contributors and encourages knowledge sharing.

Outcome

Outcome

Institutional knowledge, made findable.
A community platform that turns scattered organizational expertise into a living, searchable, AI-powered resource. Employees can learn from colleagues, find experts, and stay informed — without leaving the platform or picking up the phone.
